Thorn crown
Resurrection power produces a new life from the inside out.
Christianity is not merely one religion among many. It is not a philosophy, a moral code, or a passing cultural movement. Christianity stands alone because of one singular, history-altering event: the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

When you accept the glaring, undeniable evidence of the resurrection and submit to the lordship of Jesus Christ, everything else begins to fall into place—miracles, the authority of Scripture, the divinity of Christ. The resurrection is the key. It is the lens through which all Biblical Truth becomes clear. But here is where many believers stop short. They affirm the resurrection historically, but they fail to live in its transforming power experientially. And that is where Romans 8 speaks with thunderous clarity.

RESURRECTION POWER BRINGS TRANSFORMATION

Believing in the resurrection is not the same as living in its power. And this is where the difference between dead religion and true Christianity becomes unmistakably clear. Religion is man reaching up, striving, performing, and failing. Christianity is God Himself reaching down—coming from heaven, living among us, dying for us, and rising again in victory. When a soul truly meets the risen Christ, that soul does not negotiate behavioral adjustments. That soul experiences total transformation (see 2 Corinthians 5:17).

Romans 8 declares that a repentant sinner is not only forgiven but empowered by the very Spirit of the living God. Apart from the Holy Spirit, obedience is impossible. Moral effort will always fail. Human performance will always disappoint. But resurrection power produces a new life from the inside out—not by our power but by Christ’s power in us. This is incredibly important. If you grasp the glorious gift of God’s Spirit in you, it will transform your life from one of effort, toil, and self-reliance to one of peace, joy, and total surrender.

THE RESURRECTION BRINGS GOD’S SPIRIT TO LIVE WITHIN US

The resurrection of Jesus Christ did not merely secure forgiveness—it made possible the indwelling of God’s Spirit in every believer. Jesus promised to send us an Advocate—also translated Helper or Comforter—because He knew in our own power we are no match for the fallen world, the fallen nature, and the fallen angel, who is the devil. He did not leave us as orphans (see John 14:18). He fulfilled His promise to make His home with us (see v. 23), giving us His Spirit for three dazzling reasons.

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT ENSURES OUR LIBERTY AND FREEDOM IN CHRIST

The Holy Spirit indwells us so that we might no longer live as slaves to sin (see Romans 8:2-4). Through Christ’s perfect sacrifice, we have been set free, and through the gift of His perfect Spirit, we are empowered to pursue holiness. In fact, the more we surrender to His leading in our lives, the more we will hunger for righteousness.

When the Holy Spirit takes over, He lifts us above fear, temptation, anxiety, and defeat. This is the daily, practical victory Christ obtained for us. God gave you His Spirit, His breath, to defend, shield, and empower you. That’s why John said, “[T]he one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). To try to follow Jesus’ perfect example without Jesus’ perfect Holy Spirit will only lead to failure and frustration, so we must welcome and draw on the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT SEALS OUR ADOPTION AS GOD’S CHILDREN

In Romans 8:5-17, Paul explains that the Holy Spirit brings about our adoption to sonship (see v. 15). He witnesses, confirms, and guarantees that we belong to God. Now, He doesn’t force your adoption. In fact, there may be moral, generous, religious people who are active in their churches and who exhibit commendable traits, but if they are not led by the Spirit, they are not God’s adopted children. The Holy Spirit only seals a willing obedience.

The Holy Spirit seals our adoption to sonship by opening our eyes to the Truth of Scripture, helping us obey God’s will revealed in His Word, and empowering us to say no to sin. He gives us the freedom to cry, “Abba, Father!”—not in fear but in intimacy, assuring us that we are indeed “heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17). That’s an incomprehensible inheritance! Everything that Jesus received by divine rights, we will receive by divine grace as adopted children of God, marked by His Spirit.

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT TURNS OUR GROANING INTO GLORY

Finally, Romans 8:18-27 reveals that the Holy Spirit transforms suffering into hope. We groan because we live in a fallen world. We groan from sickness, loss, injustice, and grief. Even creation groans under the curse of sin. But our suffering is temporary, and our glory is eternal. Indeed, “our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (v. 18).

As long as we live in this earthly tent, we will groan. We groan for personal sufferings, the brokenness of creation, and the evil that enslaves. We groan for eternity and our full redemption. And the Holy Spirit also groans within us. He helps us in our weakness. When we do not know how to pray, He intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. He takes our confusion to the throne of God and brings back divine assurance, empowering us to trust in His perfect timing.

RESURRECTION POWER FOR TODAY

When we experience firsthand the resurrection power of Christ, we will have power for living—for we will have the mind of Christ (see 1 Corinthians 2:15-16). Let us therefore remember the resurrection, clinging to the Lord’s grace, mercy, and love, and keep in step with His Spirit—that we might bear eternal fruit.
