When Christian doctrine unravels, Truth is obscured. When Truth is obscured, faith weakens. And when faith weakens, both individuals and churches begin to drift. The question is not merely, “What is happening to Canada?” The more urgent question is, “Where do you stand in the midst of it?” What anchors your soul when nearly everything around you is moving? The Ligonier State of Theology 2025: Canada surveyed more than 3,000 Canadian adults, and its findings confirm what faithful pastors and Biblical Christians have long observed: theological confusion is no longer peripheral. It is widespread, normalized, and deeply embedded in the culture. The language of faith has not entirely disappeared, but its meaning is fading. People still speak about God, but many do not know the God revealed in Scripture. They still use Biblical words, but they increasingly reject Biblical Truth. Christianity has not simply been discarded; it has been reconstructed according to personal preference. That is more dangerous than honest unbelief. Confusion About God Consider the doctrine at the very heart of the Christian faith: the nature of God Himself. Only 36 percent of Canadians strongly agree that there is one true God in three Persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Nearly an equal proportion either disagree or remain uncertain. This is not a minor theological detail. The Trinity is not an optional doctrine for specialists to debate. It concerns the identity of the living God. The confusion becomes even clearer when we consider religious pluralism. Sixty-three percent of Canadian adults agree that God accepts the worship of all religions, including Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, while another 17 percent are unsure. My friends, hear me clearly: the belief that all religions lead equally to God cannot be reconciled with the words of Jesus Christ. He did not say, “I am one possible way.” He declared, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). That claim is exclusive because Truth, by its very nature, is exclusive. Two contradictory claims cannot both be true. Either Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father, as He said, or He is not. There is no comfortable middle ground. A culture may continue to speak warmly about spirituality while rejecting the God of Scripture. It may retain “God-talk” while losing God-knowledge. But once Christ is no longer recognized as the unique Savior, He will inevitably be reduced to a teacher, a moral example, or a spiritual guide. And that is precisely what the study reveals. The Collapse of Biblical Authority Behind every major doctrinal collapse lies a crisis of authority. Who has the final word—God or man? Scripture or culture? The revealed Truth of God or the changing preferences of the human heart? Only 18 percent of Canadians strongly affirm that the Bible is fully accurate in all it teaches. Think about that. The overwhelming majority of the nation either rejects, doubts, or remains uncertain about the God-breathed Word that was given to reveal who God is, who we are, and how sinners may be reconciled to Him. When people reject the authority of Scripture, they close their ears to the voice of God—not because God has ceased to speak, but because they have ceased to listen. This is why the struggle over the Bible is never merely academic. If Scripture is not authoritative, then every doctrine becomes negotiable. God may be reimagined. Jesus may be redefined. Sin may be minimized. Salvation may be reinvented. Morality may be adjusted to suit the spirit of the age. The first question of the serpent in the Garden was, “Did God really say?” That question still echoes through every generation. It is the question behind every compromise, every distortion, and every effort to place human judgment above divine revelation. Beloved, we must decide: Will we believe what God has spoken, or will we believe only those portions that agree with us? The Dangerous Myth of Human Goodness More than 65 percent of Canadians agree that “everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature.” That statement may sound compassionate and reasonable, but it strikes at the very foundation of the Gospel. If man is basically good, then the Cross becomes unnecessary. If our problem is merely ignorance, weakness, or a lack of opportunity, then we need education, encouragement, or social improvement—not a Savior. But Scripture teaches something far more serious. Humanity is not merely imperfect; humanity is fallen. Sin is not an occasional blemish on an otherwise pure nature. It is rebellion against a holy God, and it has corrupted every part of human life. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). This does not mean that every person is as evil as he or she could possibly be. It means that no person is righteous enough to stand before God on the basis of personal goodness. We are not saved because we are better than others. We are saved only by the mercy and grace of God through Jesus Christ. Here is the dividing line of all theology: Do we believe what God has declared about man, or what man prefers to believe about himself? What do you believe about your own heart? Your answer will determine what you believe about your need for Christ. A Reduced Christ Cannot Save Perhaps the most sobering finding concerns the identity of Jesus. Fifty-six percent of Canadians agree that Jesus was a great teacher but not God, while another 18 percent are uncertain. This is not simply atheism. It is redefinition. To reduce Christ is to reject the Christ revealed in Scripture. A merely human teacher cannot bear the sins of the world. A moral example cannot defeat death. A religious leader cannot reconcile fallen humanity to a holy God. Only the eternal Son of God can save. Jesus declared, “Before Abraham was born, I am!” (John 8:58). He also said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30). His enemies understood precisely what He was claiming, which is why they accused Him of making Himself equal with God. Jesus did not leave open the option of admiring Him while denying His identity. Either He is Lord, or He is not who He claimed to be. So I ask you directly: Who is Jesus Christ to you? Is He merely a teacher? A moral example? A comforting religious figure? Or is He the living Son of God, the crucified and risen Savior, and the Lord before whom every knee will bow? Only one of those answers leads to eternal life. Moral Drift Follows Theological Drift When people lose clarity about God, they inevitably lose clarity about right and wrong. Moral confusion does not arise in isolation. It follows theological confusion. That is why marriage is redefined. Human identity is redefined. Sexual morality is redefined. Even Truth itself is redefined. But when everything is redefined, nothing remains true. Large numbers of Canadians now reject Biblical teaching concerning marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman, sexual ethics rooted in Scripture, and God’s moral authority over human identity. In some areas, agreement and disagreement are nearly evenly divided—not because society has reached clarity, but because it has lost its foundation. When God’s authority is rejected, morality becomes negotiable. Right and wrong are no longer received from the Creator; they are determined by desire, consensus, or political power. That path does not lead to freedom. It leads to bondage and fragmentation. The Church Must Not Mirror the Culture’s Confusion What does all this mean for the Church? It means we are no longer ministering in a culture that simply rejects Christianity. We are ministering in a culture that has reconstructed it. People may believe in a god, but not the God of the Bible. They may admire Jesus, but refuse to submit to Him. They may value spirituality, but reject Biblical Truth. This is not the hour for a softer message, a quieter Gospel, or a diluted discipleship. It is the hour for clarity. When the culture is confused about God, the Church must not be. When the culture is uncertain about Truth, the Church must proclaim it. When the culture is drifting, the Church must remain anchored to the unchanging Word of God. This does not mean we speak with hostility or arrogance. Biblical conviction is never an excuse for cruelty. We proclaim Truth because we love those who are lost. We warn because eternity is real. We call people to repentance because there is forgiveness, grace, and new life in Jesus Christ. God is not looking for clever strategies that imitate the world. He is looking for surrendered and obedient hearts. In every generation, He accomplishes His purposes through men and women who refuse to bow to confusion. The Answer Is Faithful Discipleship The diagnosis is serious, but it is not ultimate. Canada’s theological fragmentation is real, measurable, and visible—but it is not sovereign. The Word of God has not changed. The Gospel has not weakened. Christ has not been dethroned. The Holy Spirit has not withdrawn. Therefore, the call of this hour is not despair, but discipleship; not retreat, but proclamation; not confusion, but conviction; and above all, not compromise, but Christ. Biblical discipleship means more than identifying error in the culture. It means submitting every part of our own lives to Jesus Christ. It means reading and obeying the Word of God, teaching sound doctrine in our homes and churches, repenting of known sin, praying for spiritual awakening, proclaiming the Gospel, and equipping new believers to follow Christ faithfully. A drifting culture will not excuse a drifting soul. Where do you stand—not your family, your denomination, your church background, or your cultural heritage, but you? Where do you stand before the living God? Jesus Christ is Lord. The Bible is Truth. Sin is real. Grace is sufficient. Salvation is found in Christ alone. Everything else will pass away, but the Word of God remains forever. Therefore, stand firm when the world drifts. Stand firm when Christian doctrine is questioned. Stand firm when Truth is redefined. In a fragmented nation, God is still calling His people to return to Him, to His Word, to Truth, and to faithful discipleship. Those who build their lives upon Christ will not be shaken.

QUESTION: “How can I praise God when I’m overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, and pain?” ANSWER: No matter how difficult or unjust our circumstances, ultimately, we choose whether to praise God or to neglect the praise that only He deserves. We choose what we praise God for and how long, frequently, and intensely we praise Him. Praise is driven by our will. It must never be dependent upon emotions or whims. In fact, it is precisely during those times when we don’t feel like praising God that we most need to praise Him. That’s because praise is about what God desires us to do, not about the power of life circumstances. When you take your eyes off your immediate problem and place your focus on God, you redirect yourself toward what God will do for you. For believers in Christ, this tangible, physical world is not our ultimate home. Our ultimate home is the heavenly spiritual realm where the presence and power of God is openly manifested at all times. When we start to view our present physical life in light of the ultimate spiritual life, things begin to change. Optimism, faith, and hope take root and flourish. This is how praise refocuses our feelings. God’s realm comforts, empowers, and heals us. That’s the real world we all seek.

A recent medical study suggests that intercessory prayer may be associated with reduced pain and anxiety levels in patients. And at first glance, the numbers seem compelling. Pain reduced. Anxiety decreased. Measurable change documented in clinical terms. But hear me clearly: science may measure the effect, but it cannot measure the Presence. It cannot measure the nearness of God. It cannot measure the moment Heaven bends low over a suffering soul. It cannot measure what happens when a believer whispers, “Lord, help me,” and finds that Christ Himself is already near. A World That Measures Everything—Except God Pain has a way of stripping life down to its most essential questions. Where is God in suffering? Does prayer truly matter when the body is in agony? And can science ever measure what happens in the invisible realm of communion with God? A controlled study at the University of Maryland examined 180 patients in a primary-care setting. Ninety received five minutes of Christ-centered intercessory prayer. Ninety others received background music. The results were carefully recorded. Those who received prayer experienced a reduction in pain—between one and two points on an eleven-point scale. Anxiety levels also decreased by approximately two points, with effects persisting in follow-up evaluations. And we do not dismiss such findings. We thank God for every mercy that brings relief to human suffering. But we must ask a far deeper question. What exactly has been measured? Only the surface. Only the symptom. Only the outward effect. Because science can measure relief, but it cannot measure revelation. What the Data Can and Cannot Tell Us Let us be clear. The data is real. The reduction in pain is real. The easing of anxiety is real. But science is limited to what can be observed, quantified, and repeated. It can chart numbers—but it cannot chart nearness to God. It can graph improvement—but it cannot graph divine encounter. It can track symptoms—but it cannot touch the soul. And so it stops at the threshold of the unseen. But God does not. What Science Cannot Measure Science can record a lower pain score. But it cannot record the tear-stained prayer of a believer who cries out in weakness and finds strength beyond explanation. It cannot measure the stillness that descends when Christ draws near to the brokenhearted. It cannot quantify the peace that surpasses understanding. It cannot weigh the glory of God’s presence filling a suffering room. And yet Scripture declares with holy certainty: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” —James 4:8. Do you see it? This is not theory. This is Truth. Prayer is not psychological comfort. It is not religious ritual. It is not emotional self-soothing. Prayer is communion with the living God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Prayer Is Not a Technique—It Is a Relationship We live in a generation obsessed with technique. We measure outcomes. We analyze methods. We demand results. But prayer is not a method to be mastered. Prayer is not a formula to be applied. Prayer is not a mechanism to control outcomes. Hear this: Prayer is relationship with God. Prayer is surrender before His throne. Prayer is access—through the blood of Jesus Christ—to the very presence of Almighty God. When we reduce prayer to “Did it work?” we reveal how far we have drifted from its true meaning. Because prayer is not ultimately about results. Prayer is about God Himself. Suffering Reveals What Comfort Hides Pain does something that comfort never can. It exposes the illusion of control. Comfort whispers, “You are fine.” Pain declares, “You are not in control.” And in that place—where human strength collapses—God reveals Himself as sufficient. The psalmist declares: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” —Psalm 46:1 Not distant. Not indifferent. Not detached. Ever-present. It is better to be in pain with Christ near you than to be in comfort without Him. The Greater Reality Behind All Things One truth must be settled in our hearts: Science can measure pain. But it cannot measure eternity. Science can track symptoms. But it cannot track the soul. And here is the greater reality: God is not guessing about suffering. God is not distant from suffering. God is not unaware of suffering. One hundred percent of suffering is known to Him. And in Christ: One hundred percent of sin is forgiven. One hundred percent of redemption is secured. One hundred percent of eternity is guaranteed. Conclusion: Presence Over Prognosis So we return to the question. Does prayer reduce pain? The study suggests yes. But the Gospel declares something infinitely greater. When we pray, we do not merely experience relief—we enter communion with Christ Himself. And where Christ is present, suffering does not have the final word. Pain does not have the final word. Science does not have the final word. Death does not have the final word. Jesus does. And He is making all things new. Therefore, let us not merely analyze prayer. Let us practice it. Let us not merely observe suffering. Let us bring it before the throne of grace. And let us not merely seek answers. Let us seek the living Christ. For in the end, it is not what science measures that matters most. It is who we meet in the presence of God.

Open Your Eyes: Biblical Revival and Evangelism Begin When the Church Returns to the Great Commission Many Christians are praying for revival in America. But what is Biblical revival? Biblical revival is not merely a crowded worship service, a wave of emotion, or a longing for the moral atmosphere of an earlier generation. True revival is God awakening His people to repentance, holiness, Biblical Truth, Gospel mission, and obedience to the Great Commission. When God truly revives His people, He does not make them inward-looking. He sends them into the harvest. Jesus said, “Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest” (John 4:35). The question is not whether the harvest is ready. The question is whether the Church can see it. What Is Biblical Revival? Biblical revival is not spiritual excitement detached from obedience. It is not religious energy without repentance. It is not nostalgia for a time when Christianity seemed more culturally respected. True revival is the work of God by which He awakens His people to Himself. He restores their love for Christ. He renews their confidence in His Word. He humbles them in repentance. He strengthens them in holiness. And He sends them out with fresh compassion for the lost. In John 4, Jesus’ disciples witnessed something they did not expect. A spiritually broken Samaritan woman encountered Christ, believed, and immediately became a witness to her village. The woman who came to the well in shame left as an evangelist. Her simple testimony—“Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did” (John 4:29)—became the instrument God used to bring many to Christ. Dr. Michael Youssef has described this Samaritan awakening as an enormous spiritual revival ignited through the conversion of the most unlikely person. That is often how God works. He delights to use unlikely people, weak vessels, and unexpected moments to magnify the power of His grace. The prayer of every believer should be: Lord, give us something like that again. But if God answers that prayer, He will not merely stir our emotions. He will open our eyes. Biblical Revival Begins When the Church Opens Its Eyes The disciples’ problem in John 4 was not that the fields were barren. Jesus said the opposite: They were ripe. The danger was that the disciples could not see them. That is often our problem as well. We see cultural decline. We see political confusion. We see moral rebellion. We see hostility toward Biblical faith. We see empty pews, anxious families, distracted children, and churches tempted to soften the Gospel in order to remain acceptable. But do we see the harvest? Jesus did. He saw a Samaritan woman no respectable rabbi would have sought out. He saw a village ready to hear. He saw spiritual hunger beneath moral brokenness. He saw worshipers whom the Father was seeking (John 4:23). And He told His disciples to lift up their eyes. Revival begins when God opens the eyes of His people—not merely to the wickedness of the age, but to the ripeness of the harvest. It is possible to be doctrinally concerned and evangelistically cold. It is possible to be culturally informed and spiritually asleep. It is possible to lament America’s decline while ignoring the neighbor, coworker, student, immigrant, family member, or stranger whom God has placed directly in front of us. The fields are not waiting to become ripe. Jesus says they already are. True Revival Restores Our First Love for Christ In Revelation 2:1-7, Jesus commends the church in Ephesus for its works, labor, perseverance, and doctrinal discernment. They tested false apostles, rejected evil, endured hardship. They were busy, serious, and Biblically sound. And yet Christ said, “You have forsaken the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4). That warning is painfully relevant. Evangelicals can be right on many things and still be spiritually wrong before Christ. We can defend Truth and yet lose tenderness. We can expose error and yet lose compassion. We can maintain programs, platforms, and positions while our love for Jesus grows cold. Revival is not less Truth. It is Truth set on fire by love for Christ. The Church does not need shallow emotionalism. But neither does it need cold correctness. We need the Spirit of God to bring us back to our first love —to the wonder of salvation, the joy of forgiveness, the fear of the Lord, the beauty of holiness, and the privilege of proclaiming Christ. A loveless church may preserve its reputation for a season, but it will not burn with missionary urgency. Only the love of Christ makes obedience joyful. Only love sends believers into the harvest. Spiritual Awakening Begins with Repentance Many Christians long for God to change the nation. But Scripture repeatedly shows that God begins with His people. The call of 2 Chronicles 7:14 is not addressed first to pagan rulers but to “my people.” Peter says judgment begins with the household of God (1 Peter 4:17). Jesus’ letters in Revelation are addressed to churches before they are addressed to empires. Politics matters. Laws matter. Leadership matters. Christians should be faithful citizens. But political victories cannot resurrect a prayerless Church. Legislation cannot create holiness. Elections cannot produce regeneration. No party platform can do what only the Holy Spirit can do. Revival begins when believers stop blaming “the culture” long enough to confess our own sins: prayerlessness, pride, bitterness, compromise, fear of man, love of comfort, neglect of Scripture, and indifference toward the lost. We cannot call the nation to repentance while excusing rebellion in our own hearts. The Church must recover the prayer of David: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts” (Psalm 139:23). We must recover the cry of Isaiah: “Woe to me!” (Isaiah 6:5). We must recover the humility of Peter: “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” (Luke 5:8). True revival does not flatter us. It humbles us before the holiness of God—and then sends us out cleansed, commissioned, and courageous. Revival Must Lead to Gospel Proclamation A revived Church does not merely become more active. It becomes more faithful to the message entrusted to it. The apostle Paul said, “What we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord” (2 Corinthians 4:5). That sentence is a safeguard against every counterfeit mission. We do not preach ourselves. We do not preach politics as salvation. We do not preach therapeutic self-improvement. We do not preach moralism, prosperity, nationalism, universalism, or vague spirituality. We preach Christ—crucified, risen, reigning, and coming again. The Church must respond to false teaching by reinforcing Biblical doctrine and clinging to the highest authority, the Word of God. The answer to theological confusion is not novelty but Christ Himself: Christ promised in Genesis, born of a virgin, crucified for sin, risen from the grave, ascended to the right hand of the Father, and coming again to judge the living and the dead. This is not secondary. Revival without Gospel clarity is not revival. A crowd can gather around emotion, music, personality, activism, or shared outrage. But the Church is built on the confession that Jesus Christ is Lord. The Gospel is not that people are basically good and need encouragement. The Gospel is that sinners are dead in trespasses and sins, unable to save themselves, but God in His mercy has sent His Son to bear the wrath we deserve, rise victorious over death, and grant eternal life to all who repent and believe (Ephesians 2:1-10; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4). A revived Church will recover confidence in that message. Not confidence in our cleverness. Not confidence in branding. Not confidence in cultural respectability. Confidence in the power of God through the Gospel. Evangelism Is the Fruit of a Revived Church Living out the Great Commission is not an optional ministry interest for unusually gifted Christians. It is the marching order of the risen Christ: “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). That is the heartbeat of Biblical revival. When God revives His people, they turn outward in Gospel compassion. They begin to see lost people not as enemies to defeat, but as souls to reach. They see the prodigal, the skeptic, the addict, the nonbeliever, the secular neighbor, the confused teenager, the hardened relative, and the broken coworker as people made in God’s image and in desperate need of Christ. Revival gives the Church tears again. It gives courage again. It gives urgency again. It gives us the holy inability to remain silent. Evangelism is not a technique for growing churches. It is love speaking. It is compassion warning. It is worship overflowing. It is obedience moving toward the lost because Christ moved toward us. If we claim to desire revival but have no burden for those who are separated from Christ, we have misunderstood revival. The Spirit who awakens the Church also sends the Church. How to Pray for Revival and the Great Commission No true Spiritual Awakening can be manufactured. We cannot schedule the wind of the Spirit. But we can set our sails. We can pray. Jeremiah 33:3 says, “Call upon me, and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which you don’t know.” God is both able and willing to answer the prayers of His people. The problem is not that believers ask too much of God. Too often, we ask too little. That is especially true when it comes to revival. We pray small prayers for manageable improvements when God invites us to ask for Spiritual Awakening. We ask for comfort when we should ask for courage. We ask for protection from difficulty when we should ask for faithfulness in the fire. We ask God to bless our plans when we should ask Him to break our hearts for what breaks His. God can begin with a handful of praying believers. He can begin in a prayer room, a living room, a church basement, a college dorm, a pastor’s study, or a family gathered around the dinner table. He can begin with one believer who is tired of spiritual apathy and willing to say, “Lord, start with me.” Prayer for revival is not passive. It is not a way to avoid obedience. It is the place where God aligns our hearts with His, renews our faith, and prepares us to go where He sends. How Should Christians Respond to Biblical Revival? We can begin by asking God to search our hearts and expose anything that has dulled our love for Christ. We can pray daily for lost people by name. We can recover confidence in the Gospel by returning to Scripture. We can take one concrete step of witness—inviting someone to church, sharing our testimony, opening the Bible with a friend, or supporting Gospel ministry among unreached people. Revival may begin in the prayer closet, but it never stays there. It moves outward in love. The prayer we need is not vague religious longing. It is specific, Biblical, costly surrender: Heavenly Father, revive Your Church. Renew our passion for the mission You have entrusted to us. Open our eyes to the harvest. Forgive us for being distracted by lesser things. Fill us with compassion, courage, and urgency. Bring another Great Spiritual Awakening that results in repentance, holiness, disciple-making, and Gospel proclamation. That prayer is dangerous because God may answer it by disturbing our comfort. He may send us across the street before He sends us across the world. He may ask us to forgive, repent, reconcile, speak, give, go, pray, or weep. He may call us to stop hiding behind cultural commentary and start bearing witness to Christ. But that is revival. Biblical revival is believers waking up to God, returning to first love, standing on Biblical Truth, repenting of sin, praying with faith, and obeying the Great Commission. The Church does not need a revival that ends in memory. We need a revival that bears fruit in obedience. So let us pray for revival—but let us understand what we are asking. We are asking God to awaken His Church, purify His people, restore our love for Christ, and send us again into the harvest. The fields are ripe. The Gospel is still the power of God for salvation. The Great Commission has not expired. Lord, open our eyes.

National repentance is not a political slogan, a sentimental longing for better days, or a substitute for the Gospel. It is a Biblical summons for God’s people to humble themselves, confess sin, return to the authority of Scripture, and proclaim the only hope for any nation: repentance and salvation through Jesus Christ. From Judah in Jeremiah’s day to America in times of national crisis, Scripture and history remind us that when a people forsake God, judgment follows; when they humble themselves before Him, mercy is still possible. What Is National Repentance? There are moments in the life of a nation when ordinary language is not strong enough. “Concern” is too weak. “Renewal” is too shallow. “Reform” is too political. The Biblical word is repentance. Repentance is not mere regret. It is not sorrow over consequences, embarrassment over exposure, or fear of decline. True repentance is a Spirit-wrought turning from sin to the Living God. It is confession without excuse, humility without pretense, and obedience without negotiation. For an individual, repentance means standing before the holiness of God and saying, “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight” (Psalm 51:4). For a nation, repentance means acknowledging that no military strength, economic prosperity, political philosophy, technological achievement, or cultural influence can shield a people who have forsaken the Lord. America is not Israel, and the United States does not stand in the same covenantal relationship to God as Old Testament Israel. Yet every nation remains accountable to the Lord who judges peoples with righteousness. “The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity” (Psalm 9:7-8). Scripture does not flatter nations. It tells the Truth. Nations rise and fall under the sovereign rule of Almighty God. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). But the opposite is also true: when a people forget God, their outward stability may remain for a season, but inward decay has already begun. That is why the Church must recover the language of national repentance. Not vague spirituality. Not patriotic sentiment. Not moral outrage aimed only at unbelievers. Biblical repentance begins with the people of God. 2 Chronicles 7:14 and National Repentance The most familiar passage on national repentance is 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from Heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” This promise was given in the context of Solomon’s temple and God’s covenant dealings with Israel. It should not be detached from holiness, covenant accountability, or obedience. Yet it reveals a timeless Biblical principle: when God’s people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from wickedness, God delights to show mercy. The order matters. God does not first address the pagan nations surrounding Israel. He says, “my people.” The first call is not to the halls of power, the marketplace, the academy, or the entertainment industry. The first call is to those who bear His name. National repentance begins when God’s people stop excusing their compromise and return to Him in humility, prayer, and obedience. This is a necessary word for America. A nation may be protected by oceans, defended by armies, enriched by commerce, and admired by the world, yet still be rotting within. A magnificent tree may appear strong from the outside while termites consume it from within. So it is with nations. External defenses cannot save a people from internal rebellion against God. A Biblical Example of National Repentance: Judah’s Need to Return The prophet Jeremiah gives us one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of national spiritual collapse. Judah had the temple. Judah had the law. Judah had the history of God’s mighty deliverance. Judah had received prophets, promises, and privileges beyond measure. Yet privilege did not preserve the nation from judgment when the people turned from the Lord. Jeremiah exposed the root of the crisis: “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2:13). That is the anatomy of national apostasy. First, a people forsake God. Then, they replace Him. They do not become neutral. They dig broken cisterns—leaky wells that can never hold the water of life—false sources of hope, wisdom, security, and salvation. Judah’s collapse did not begin at the margins. It began among those who should have known better. Jeremiah 2:8 says, “The priests did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.” Religious leaders stopped seeking the Lord. Those entrusted with the law did not know Him. Civil leaders rebelled. Prophets spoke falsely. The result was not private failure only; it became national poison. This is a severe mercy from Scripture. God shows us that national decline is not merely economic, military, educational, or political. It is spiritual. When the pulpit loses its courage, when leaders abandon righteousness, when prophets speak lies, and when the people prefer broken cisterns to the fountain of living water, judgment is already at the door. Yet Jeremiah does not leave us without hope. In Lamentations 5:21, after devastation had become painfully visible, the prophet cried, “Restore us to yourself, Lord, that we may return; renew our days as of old.” That is the cry of repentance. Not “restore our comfort” first. Not “restore our influence” first. Not “restore our prosperity” first. “Restore us to Yourself.” That must be the Church’s cry in America: Lord, restore us to Yourself. David and the Heart of True Repentance Although David’s repentance was personal rather than national, it is indispensable for understanding the kind of repentance God receives. When Nathan confronted David after his sin with Bathsheba and Uriah, David did not argue. He did not blame circumstances. He did not hide behind royal privilege. He said, “I have sinned against the Lord” (2 Samuel 12:13). Psalm 51 shows us what was happening in David’s heart. His repentance was not cheap, fleeting, or merely emotional. It was genuine. It grieved over sin. It used the Biblical language of transgression, iniquity, and sin. It sought cleansing, restoration, and a renewed heart before God: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). This matters because nations are made up of people, and churches are made up of repentant—or unrepentant—hearts. A church that refuses personal repentance has no authority to call a nation to repentance. National repentance without personal repentance becomes theater. But personal repentance that remains silent in the face of national sin becomes cowardice. God calls His people to both humility and witness. The Church must therefore begin where David began: confession before a holy God. We must confess prayerlessness, compromise, fear of man, tolerance of false teaching, neglect of Scripture, and coldness toward the lost. Only then can we speak to the nation with spiritual integrity. An American Example of National Repentance: Lincoln’s Call to Prayer and Fasting The United States has seen moments when national leaders publicly recognized the need for repentance before God. One of the clearest examples came during the Civil War. On March 30, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation appointing April 30, 1863, as “a day of national humiliation, fasting, and prayer.” The nation was tearing itself apart. Bloodshed covered the land. Families were divided. The future of the Union was uncertain. Yet Lincoln’s proclamation did not merely call for military resolve or political unity. It called the nation to humble itself before God, confess national sins, and pray for clemency and forgiveness. Lincoln recognized that nations, like individuals, are subject to the overruling power of God. He acknowledged that the blessings America had received had been forgotten and that the nation had become too proud to pray to the God who made it. In a time of calamity, the call was not simply to strategy, unity, or victory. It was to humiliation before the Lord. This does not mean every American was repentant. It does not mean the nation experienced complete spiritual renewal. Nor does it mean America occupies the same covenantal position as Old Testament Israel. But Lincoln’s proclamation remains a sobering illustration: in a time of national crisis, America’s need was recognized not merely as political or military, but spiritual. That lesson must not be lost on the Church today. Why National Repentance Must Begin with the Church The Church must not call America to repent while refusing repentance herself. Judgment begins with the household of God (1 Peter 4:17). Before we condemn the darkness, we must ask whether our own lamps are burning brightly. Have we believed the inerrant Word of God, or have we treated Scripture as something to be edited by cultural opinion? Have we proclaimed the deity of Christ, His atoning death, His bodily resurrection, and His coming judgment, or have we softened the Gospel to avoid offense? Have we loved the lost enough to call them to repentance and faith, or have we hidden behind comfort and respectability? National repentance begins when God’s people humble themselves. It begins when pastors preach the whole counsel of God. It begins when families recover worship, prayer, and obedience. It begins when believers mourn over sin more than they mourn over lost influence. It begins when the Church says, “Restore us to Yourself, Lord.” National Repentance and Gospel Proclamation The ultimate need of any nation is not merely moral improvement. The ultimate need is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A nation cannot be healed by nostalgia. It cannot be saved by political power. It cannot be redeemed by religious ritual. Sinners must be reconciled to God through the crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ. This is why the Church must never separate national repentance from Gospel proclamation and discipleship. We are not calling America merely to become more respectable. We are calling men and women to repent of sin and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. “Salvation is found in no one else” (Acts 4:12). Jesus Christ is not one hope among many. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). But a call for national repentance is not a substitute for evangelism. It must fuel evangelism. A repentant Church becomes a proclaiming Church. A humbled Church becomes a bold Church. A praying Church becomes a missionary Church. When believers are restored to the Lord, they cannot remain silent about the Savior. America does not need a vague return to religion. America needs the Living God. America needs churches aflame with Biblical Truth. America needs pastors who preach the whole counsel of God. America needs families who recover worship, prayer, and obedience. America needs believers who speak the Truth in love and proclaim without shame: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The Church must pray with Jeremiah, repent like David, heed the warning of 2 Chronicles 7, and proclaim Christ with apostolic boldness. We must stop blaming the darkness while hiding our own compromise. We must stop longing for cultural comfort while neglecting Gospel faithfulness. We must humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God. And because God is merciful, repentance is not despair. It is hope. The God who wounds also heals. The God who judges also forgives. The God who calls sinners to repentance has provided a Savior. So let this be our prayer: O Lord, restore us to Yourself. Renew our days as of old. Awaken Your Church. Save the lost. Have mercy on this nation. Make us faithful witnesses. And keep us steadfast until the day Jesus Christ returns in power and glory.

The Gospel does not merely soothe shame—it proclaims freedom from condemnation in Christ. Most of us know the ache of replaying an uncomfortable conversation or incident long after it has ended. Why did I say that? Why didn’t I say that? What if they knew the real me? How could God forgive me after what I’ve done? That is the voice of guilt. But shame goes deeper. Guilt says, “I did wrong.” Shame says, “I am wrong.” Guilt points to an action. Shame attacks identity. Guilt may lead us to confession. Shame often drives us into hiding. And while the Bible has always told us that guilt and shame are real spiritual burdens, research increasingly confirms that they are not small emotional matters either. They can affect the mind, relationships, and even a person’s willingness to seek help. Yet Scripture goes deeper still. The Word of God does not merely describe the burden of guilt and shame. It reveals the only Savior who can remove guilt at the root, silence condemnation, restore fellowship with God, and call His people out of hiding and into freedom. Romans 8:1 declares the Truth every shame-burdened believer needs to hear: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” No condemnation. Not less condemnation. Not delayed condemnation. Not condemnation waiting to return when you fail again. For those who are in Christ Jesus, there is now no condemnation. What Is the Difference Between Guilt and Shame? Guilt and shame are often used together, but they are not the same. Guilt says, “I have done something wrong.” Shame says, “Something is wrong with me.” That distinction matters. Guilt can be a mercy when it is governed by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Godly conviction exposes sin so that we may confess, repent, and receive forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ. Conviction says, “Come into the light and be cleansed.” Destructive shame says something very different. It says, “Stay in the dark. There is no hope for you.” It does not merely identify sin; it attacks identity. It does not call a person to repentance; it drives a person into despair. This is why Christians must speak with both Truth and tenderness. Some shame grows from unresolved sin we have committed. Some shame grows from sin committed against us. Some distress is spiritual, some emotional, some physical, and often these are deeply intertwined. But whatever the source, the Gospel is not silent. Christ came for sinners, sufferers, and the brokenhearted. He does not flatter sin. He forgives and transforms sinners. He does not ignore wounds. He brings the wounded into His light. How Guilt and Shame Affect Mental Health Shame often isolates, but Christ calls His people out of hiding and into the light. Research has increasingly shown that guilt and shame can weigh heavily on the mind and relationships. Shame, in particular, is often connected with depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, social withdrawal, isolation, and reluctance to seek help. In plain language, guilt may say, “I need forgiveness.” Shame often says, “I need to disappear.” That is not a small emotional inconvenience. It is a warning light. But Christians must be careful here. The research does not mean every experience of depression, anxiety, or trauma is caused by personal sin. It certainly does not indicate a lack of faith. Some faithful believers walk through seasons of deep anguish. Some carry wounds inflicted by others. Some struggle beneath burdens that require pastoral care, Christian community, wise counseling, and medical help. Seeking help is not an absence of faith. It can be one expression of walking wisely in the light. The Gospel speaks to the deepest root of guilt and shame, and God often uses pastors, physicians, counselors, and faithful friends as instruments of His care. What Does the Bible Say About Guilt and Shame? The Bible does not treat guilt and shame as illusions. Scripture tells the Truth about sin, the devastation of the fall, the burden of condemnation, and the mercy of God. From the opening chapters of Genesis, guilt and shame appear as consequences of rebellion against God. When Adam and Eve sinned, they did not simply feel guilty. They covered themselves. They hid from God. Then blame entered their relationship with one another. Sin said, “Hide.” Shame said, “Cover.” Guilt said, “Run.” That is still the pattern. Shame rarely stays private. It changes how we relate to others. It makes us withdraw, hide, blame, defend ourselves, or avoid honest conversation. It tells us that exposure will bring rejection, so we cover what most needs to be brought into the light. But God did not leave Adam and Eve in hiding. He came after them. When God asked Adam, “Where are you?” He was not lacking information. He was calling sinners out of hiding and into the light. He exposed their sin, not to destroy them, but to begin the work of redemption. That is the mercy of God. Genesis 3 Shows How Shame Drives Us into Hiding Genesis 3 is not merely an ancient account of human failure. It is the beginning of the pattern we still see today. A husband shuts down instead of confessing. A wife retreats instead of speaking honestly. A parent hides behind anger. A child believes, “If they knew the truth, they would never love me.” A believer sits in church week after week, surrounded by the family of God, while silently thinking, I am the only one struggling like this. Shame isolates us from God and others. But grace restores what shame fractures. In Christ, we are brought near to God. And in the body of Christ, we learn to walk in confession, forgiveness, prayer, patience, and love. Christian community is not meant to be a showroom for people pretending to be whole. It is a family of redeemed sinners, wounded sufferers, and grace-needing saints who are being made whole by Jesus. James 5:16 says, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” This is not a call to reckless oversharing or public exposure. It is a call to humble, wise, grace-filled honesty. It is an invitation out of secrecy and into prayer. Godly Conviction Leads to Repentance, Not Despair There is a difference between godly conviction and destructive shame. Godly conviction recognizes sin and leads a person to confess, repent, and receive forgiveness and restoration. Destructive shame says, “I did not just fail; I am a failure.” Conviction from the Holy Spirit leads us to Christ. Condemnation drives us into despair. Conviction says, “Come into the light and be cleansed.” Condemnation says, “Stay in the dark; there is no hope for you.” But Satan is a liar. He accuses what Christ has already covered. He rehearses what God has already forgiven. He tries to rename those whom God has redeemed. The Gospel does not tell us to pretend sin is not serious. It tells us sin was so serious that Christ went to the cross. The Gospel does not tell us guilt is imaginary. It tells us guilt can be removed by the blood of Jesus Christ. That is why false comfort is so dangerous. It is spiritually dangerous to tell people they have nothing to feel guilty about if there is real sin that needs confession. But it is just as dangerous to leave repentant sinners buried under condemnation when Christ has declared them forgiven. The cross of Jesus Christ tells the Truth about both sin and grace. Sin is worse than we imagine. Grace is greater than we deserve. Romans 8:1: No Condemnation for Those in Christ Jesus Romans 8:1 is not sentimental language. It is not religious optimism. It is a declaration purchased by the blood of Christ. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” For those who are in Christ, condemnation has been removed because Christ bore it. The wrath of God against sin did not vanish. It fell on the sinless Son of God at Calvary. Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, died in the place of sinners. He shed His blood for the forgiveness of sins. He rose bodily from the grave, conquering sin and death. He ascended to the right hand of the Father. And He will return in power and glory. That is why the believer’s freedom is not fragile. It does not rest on emotional strength, self-esteem, positive thinking, or human effort. It rests on the finished work of Jesus Christ. If you belong to Christ, your shame does not have the final word. Your past does not have the final word. Your failure does not have the final word. Your abuser does not have the final word. Your feelings do not have the final word. Christ has the final word. And He says, “No condemnation.” Why Guilt Needs Forgiveness and Shame Fears Exposure Guilt needs forgiveness. Shame fears exposure. This is why the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not merely therapeutic language with Bible verses attached. The Gospel does not call people to manage their shame while remaining dead in sin. It calls sinners to repentance and faith in the only Savior who can forgive, cleanse, restore, and make new. God’s law functions like a mirror, revealing our sinful nature and showing our total inability to save ourselves. The law demonstrates our desperate need for grace and drives us to a Deliverer. We cannot cleanse ourselves. We cannot cover ourselves. We cannot save ourselves. But Christ can. He does not merely improve the guilty sinner. He redeems. He does not merely comfort the ashamed. He restores. He does not merely speak kindly to those hiding in darkness. He calls them into His marvelous light. How Christians Can Walk in Freedom from Guilt and Shame Freedom from guilt and shame is not found by denying sin, excusing sin, or redefining sin. Freedom is found in coming to Christ in repentance and faith. Sometimes the path to peace begins with confession. Sometimes it begins with receiving forgiveness already promised. Sometimes it means bringing an old wound into the light with a trusted pastor, mature believer, or Christian counselor. Sometimes it means refusing Satan’s lie that your worst moment is your truest identity. And sometimes it means obeying God in the next small step. Tell the truth. Ask forgiveness. Seek help. Open Scripture. Pray honestly. Come out of hiding. In Daniel chapter 1, Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, were enslaved in Babylon, yet they were free in the deepest sense because they obeyed God rather than bowing to man’s approval. Their obedience freed them from sin and guilt, from fear, from confusion, and from craving man’s approval. But do not confuse obedience with legalism. Legalism tries to earn God’s acceptance. Obedience flows from already belonging to Him. The Christian does not obey in order to be loved by God. The Christian obeys because, in Christ, he already is. When Christians Should Seek Help for Shame, Anxiety, or Depression Seeking wise help is not a failure of faith; it can be an act of walking in the light. A Christian article on guilt, shame, and mental health must make this clear: Seeking help is not an absence of faith. If you are battling depression, anxiety, PTSD symptoms, or overwhelming shame, do not let shame keep you silent. Those struggling with persistent or extreme anxiety should use Biblical tools alongside deeper one-on-one ministry through the church or Christian counseling. For some, this will mean confessing sin to the Lord for the first time. For others, it will mean seeking forgiveness from a spouse, child, friend, or fellow believer. For others, it will mean reaching out to a pastor, mature Christian, or counselor and saying, “I cannot carry this alone anymore.” And for those struggling with persistent depression, anxiety, trauma, or thoughts of self-harm, seeking professional help is not a failure of faith. It can be one expression of walking wisely in the light. The body of Christ is not a showroom for people pretending to be whole. It is a family of redeemed sinners, wounded warriors, and grace-needing saints who are being made whole by Jesus. Come Out of Hiding The Gospel does not minimize guilt; it removes it. The Gospel does not flatter the sinner; it forgives and transforms the sinner. The Gospel does not tell the abused, the repentant, the weary, or the ashamed to try harder to become lovable. The Gospel declares something far better: Christ has come for sinners, sufferers, and the brokenhearted—and those who belong to Him are not defined by what they have done or by what has been done to them. Psalm 32 gives us the testimony of a man who tried hiding his guilt and found it unbearable. David wrote, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away” (Psalm 32:3). But when he confessed his sin, he discovered the mercy of God. In Psalm 51, David prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). The Lord did not leave David in hiding. He restored him. Stop hiding. Stop covering. Stop rehearsing what Christ has already forgiven. Stop allowing shame to rename what God has redeemed. Bring your guilt to Christ in confession. Bring your shame to Christ in honesty. Bring your wounds into the light with wise, Biblical help. And when the accuser whispers that you are beyond grace, answer him with the Word of God: In the Lord Jesus Christ, there is freedom from guilt and shame. Remember that. Believe that. Proclaim that to others.
